Things to do in spring

2. April 2019

Spring is here! It’s the most varied season in Tyrol – and therefore one of our favrourite ones! While the winter is still strong high up in the mountains, it already feels like spring and summer in the valley. In spring you can do so many things at the same time: Start your first hikes, enjoy the first spring flowers, jump into the ice cold lake or enjoy the last snowfalls of the season. We’ve got some ideas and inspiration how to make the most of the new season.

Forest bathing: Breathe in the spring air

Take a deep breath and let the fresh spring air flow deep into your lungs. The scent of earth and leaves in the forest is wonderful – it also smells of new beginnings! The first delicate flowers are already sprouting from the ground and the birds are chirping. Pure spring feelings! Take a break for yourself and bathe in the spring forest.

Get your gear ready for the new season

The winter brought above all one thing: lots of snow! The mountain railways now take a short break before they start intothe summer season. You, too, can switch to summer: Wax your skis again before you put them in the basement (this is the best way to get them into the next winter), replace the thick winter jacket with the lighter one and get your hiking boots back instead. They will also be happy about a little care like leather grease or a layer of impregnating spray (against wet feet on the first tour). Last but not least you can also clean the winter dust off your bike (don’t forget to oil your chains). That way you are ready for the summer season: If you want to start, everything is ready!

Just enjoy the sun

Just do nothing. Lie in the sun, take in the vitamin d and take a break from every day life. After a long winter you deserve to recharche your batteries. Wether you take a long nap, read a good book or sit in the sun: Take time for yourself.

Start into the hiking season

The snow still covers the peaks and mountains around the region. Winter has brought a lot of snow, which will last for a while. The higher summits must wait a little longer – but nevertheless you can still start into the hiking season! After all, the best preparation for hiking is – well, hiking! 😉 These are our favourite hiking tips for spring: The Brunschkopf, the 3-lake circular hike (Wildmoossee, Lottensee, Möserer See), a hike to or around the Gschwandtkopf and the bee nature trail (also perfect for families). The popular Leutasch Spirit Gorge will open again in the beginning of May.

Plan your summer

What are your plans for this summer? Watching the golden sun rise on a mountain top? Spend a rustic night at a cosy cabin? Explore the mountain world by e-bike and find out which cabin has the best Kaiserschmarrn? The possibilities are endless…! Therefore you should start planning now. Goals that should definitely be on your bucket list: The long-distance hike Karwendel Höhenweg Trail that shows you the very best of the impressive Karwendel mountain range (we recommend booking the cabins early), discover the scenic Gaistal valley by e-bike or mountain bike and conquer a summit – the Hohe Munde, Reither Spitze or Gehrenspitze are particularly worth the hike. 😉

Get ready for the Karwendelmarsch

Did you get a starting place for the Karwendel March? Then you have a perfect goal for the summer! During the Karwendel March you cross the Karwendel mountain range from Scharnitz to lake Achensee – a proud 52km want to be conquered (the distance can also be done with 35km to the Eng). To master such a long march one needs to be prepared. 😉 In spring you can start with a few runs and the first hikes (see above) in order to prevent sore muscles and nasty blisters.

By the way: Who dares to do the ultimate challenge – the Karwendel March as a run – can get fit at the trail running camp. At the end of June the participants come together for 3 days – because training together is more fun! 😉

The starting places for the legendary Karwendel March have been sold out. With a little luck you can still get a place at the starting place exchange.

For the brave: Jump into the lake for the first time

How brave are you? Jumping into the lake in spring is a dare – but one has to be the first. The water is still ice-(!)cold, but the sun is already strong and warms you up again afterwards.

Photographing the flower meadows

A picture for the gods: what a wonderful sight it is when the first crocuses sprout from the ground and turn the meadows into white-purple spotted flower carpets. And in the background, the white mountain peaks still glow. Take your camera or smartphone outside and capture these beautiful moments.

Open the climbing season

The warm spring sun is a blessing for all climbers: it heats up the rock wonderfully and ensures perfect climbing fun outside. You might want to take a warm jacket for the shade with you, but in the sun it’s already possible to climb in a t-shirt. Time to reactivate your biceps and get ready for the climbing summer! From the end of April, the walls will be ready for climbing again.

Enjoy the cross-country trails for the last time

We can never get enough of cross-country skiing – and the time until the first autumn cross-country trail opens again passes too slowly for passionate cross-country skiing fans. So use the cross-country ski trails as long as possible! 😉 The best time to go xc-skiing in spring is in the morning when the sun is shining on the first mountain peaks and the trails are freshly groomed. And probably the best thing about spring cross-country skiing: Regenerating in the warm sun!
