The most beautiful time of the year: Advent and Christmas in the Olympiaregion Seefeld

16. November 2019

When the snowflakes and the sound of Christmas music dance in the air and the heavenly scent of biscuits, mulled wine and firewood flow through the village, it is there: the Advent season. We enjoy the magic of the season in a very special way. With atmospheric Advent Markets, Christmas concerts, a unique children’s programme and contemplative chapel walks there is a lot to experience.

Enjoying the pre-Christmas season at the Seefeld Christmas Market

Delicious tyrolean specialties, hot mulled wine, lovingly manufactured handicrafts and cosy huts in the Tyrolean blockhouse style: this is the Seefeld Christmas Market. It is located in the middle of the pedestrian zone and enchants visitors of all ages. To the sound of traditional Christmas music you can enjoy regional delicacies, come together with friends and find handmade gifts for your loved ones. The tasty sausages, homemade “Kiachl” (a Tyrolean speciality), carved crib figures and homemade knitwear are just a small selection of everything the Christmas Market has to offer. And for the youngest visitors, the market has some great surprises in store…

When: 29.11.2019 until 05.01.2020, 2 pm – 9 pm every day

Where: Pedestrian area Seefeld

For the youngest visitors: Angel’s post office, Children’s bakery, sleigh rides and more

The pre-Christmas season is particularly magical for children. If your kids still believe in the Christ Child (or Father Christmas) and Saint Nicholas (and of course fear the evil Krampus), want to start their first baking attempts and ride the horse-drawn sleigh through the winter landscape, some wonderful highlights await them in the region:

Horse-drawn sleigh rides for kids

Every Sunday (01.12., 08.12., 15.12. and 22.12.) the children’s sleigh rides take place at the Christmas Market. Start is at 3 o’clock in the pedestrian area, from where the sleigh takes a small tour through the village. Bright children’s eyes and beaming faces are inevitable! The sleigh rides are free of charge.

Angel’s Post Office

The two angels from the Angel’s Post Office receive the wishes for the Christ Child (or Father Santa). Every Friday to Sunday in Advent, the little ones can write a letter. And pssst: The Christ Child is eager to make one or the other wish of the children come true during the Christmas season!

Children’s Bakery

In the Christmas Bakery in Seefeld children can make their very first baking attempts and enjoy their own delcious and pretty Christmas cookies! The “Siglu” near the village square in Seefeld turns into a bakery every Saturday and Sunday in the Advent season between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Snow slide

A cool snow slide awaits little adventurers at the Seefeld Christmas Market. Here the kids can play in the snow while the adults stroll in peace through the Christmas Market.

Santa Claus (Nikolaus) Processions

It is an old tradition in the Alpine regions that Saint Nicholas and his companion, the Krampus, visit the children to give presents to those who have been good and punish the naughty. As every year, these processions take place in all villages of the region. On 05.12. at 4 o’clock the procession and celebration takes place in Leutasch. On the same day at 5 o’clock the procession and a cosy celebration with chestnuts and mulled wine takes place in Reith. At 3 o’clock there is a celebration with Kiachl and mulled wine for a good cause in Scharnitz. Shortly after, at 4:30 p.m., the procession of the Saint Nicholas takes place in Scharnitz.

On 06.12. St. Nicholas, accompanied by his angels and the Krampus, comes to the Christmas Market in Seefeld. After he reads his story to the children, he hands out lovingly filled bags with little presents to all (good) children.

In Mösern the “Advent windows” are celebrated in the pre-Christmas period. With mulled wine and a nice get-together you can enjoy the festively decorated Advent windows. The Advent windows take place on 07.12., 14.12. and 21.12. at 6 p.m.

Children’s Christmas Celebration

On Christmas Eve, the 24th of December, the children’s mass takes place at 4 p.m. in the church St. Oswald in Seefeld.

The various chapels are each visited and Hansi and Monika Bantl, who initiated the hikes many years ago, tell a short story. Different choirs and orchestras play wonderful Christmas music. Afterwards, the evening can be rounded off with a joint meal with regional dishes. The Chapel Advent takes place every Advent weekend and the hikes always lead to different chapels. “Krampus” Festival in Seefeld

The tradition of the “Krampus” belongs to Tyrol like Kaiserschmarrn and snow. According to ancient customs, the Krampus is the demonic companion of St. Nicholas, who punishes naughty children with his birch route. The Krampus has not lost its fear over the centuries until today and frightens not only children but also adults. At the Krampus Festival in Seefeld, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, 20 Krampus groups from the entire Alpine region come together to show their customs. On Friday, 6 December, at 6 p.m., the Festival takes place in the Kurpark and the pedestrian zone. Visitors who are there for the first time should rather keep some distance from the Krampusses and admire the spectacle from the second row.

On Saturday, 7 December, the Tuiflshow of the Seefelder Tuifl and three other guest groups takes place in the Kurpark Seefeld.
